Jesse held her breath. She never knew what to expect when she arrived home after school. Sometimes her mom would be making dinner while other times, she’d be passed out on the couch with an empty bottle on her chest and HGTV on television. Dinners were becoming less frequent. Empty bottles, the norm.
Jesse couldn’t remember what life was like before her dad left but photos, faded the way paper sometimes does, painted a different story than the one she was living now. She couldn’t miss what she didn’t remember but life looked a whole lot better on glossy paper.
Sometimes photos are like memories. Do we see things as they were, or as we wanted them to be.
so true!
So much emotion packed into these 100 words and a brilliant last line.
Enjoyed

Very poignant piece that struck a nerve more painful than I care to admit. Your last line is nothing short of brilliant. Thanks for sharing.
Beautifully written words. The pain is as visible as the scene itself.
