Do I think the world is going to end on Friday? Intellectually, nope. I don’t. But then again, one can never be too sure, right? I have a tiny bit of fear…the whole unknown thing lurks.
I’d like to imagine that we’ll keep on keeping on. I mean, I have a lot to do this weekend. It’s my sons 9th birthday…OMG…and he is having a little birthday party on Sunday. I have to prepare for that. I don’t have time to prepare for anything to do with the end of the world. Although, there really isn’t much preparation needed, now is there? The end of the world would be, well…the end.
Also, Friday is my husbands poker night and OMG…he’ll be so mad if there is no world left. Can’t miss a Friday night poker game around here, even if.
And…I’m supposed to go with Christina to redeem our haircut and make over consultation gift certificates we won. I REALLY need to learn fresh new ways to wear make up and Christina REALLY wants a new haircut. It’ll be a little annoying if the world ends and we aren’t able to use these gift certificates.
I would think that if something were about to happen, my animals would be acting all strange and the goldfish would by trying to jump out of the tank. But no, the dogs are still just as lazy as ever, unless a squirrel happens to be in our front lawn, then they bark incessantly. Or a neighbor walks by with their dogs, then there is a whole lotta baying going on. And my cats are doing their typical cat things like attacking my feet or scratching the walls or barfing up hairballs on my sons bed for the millionth time this week. And the goldfish are still swimming around in circles. Well, 5 of them are. One of the big fancy ones likes to float upside down all day. Seriously.
So, there’s those little reassurances.
Anyways, even if, there’s nothing we can do about it, right. This gives people permission to party hard on Thursday.
Well.
So.
This here is the part where you think to yourself, “she’s off her rocker”. Which, by the way, I don’t have a rocker.
I’m keeping my kids home from school on Friday anyways.
Not because I’m worried about it being the end. We already touched briefly on that.
I’m more concerned about what other people are going to do, those who really believe it is the end.
Quite frankly, I’d much rather err on the side of overprotective caution. You know, just in case.
I decided this before the Newtown, CT tragedy. But frankly, that whole horrifying event made me a LOT more protective feeling.
I mean…on the G-D FORBID..IF…
I want my kids home with me. We aren’t going to be going anywhere. Just hanging out here, at home.
See…I told you. You might think I’m crazy.
But that’s OK. I’m not. At all.
I’m just a mommy.
A mommy who doesn’t want to take any chances on a day that people have been dreading for years.
Because, what I’m most worried about on December 21st?
Is what other people are going to do out of their own fear.
I figure, the only way to make sure that my children aren’t in any sort of danger is to keep them at home.
Besides, it’s the last day of school before break.
This gives the kids one extra day to drive me to unquestionable insanity.
And, I’m totally OK with that.

I don’t think the world will end, but it DID cross my mind to keep my son home from school for the same reason. People are strange and while some of them might be holed up in their basement with enough canned food to last for 25 years, some just MIGHT decide to spare everyone the horror of living through the end of the world by killing them before it happens…

I totally get it. I’m so glad my son is home from college – I need him here right now.

I will be totally P.O.ed if the Mayan calendar interferes with getting my hair cut.
All kidding aside, not likely that the world will end on Friday, but I’m sure there will be some jerks being jerks.
I am happy I read this. I was thinking about keeping my 3 Daughters home and was wondering if anyone else was thinking the same thing. I feel less crazy knowing other mothers are doing it also.
I’m with you… I don’t believe that the world will be ending on Friday. And my oldest will be staying home but only because there are two pep assemblies and the rest of the day will be 15 minute classes…. not worth going to school for in her eyes.
Genesee county (flint area), Lapeer county and some surrounding areas have closed all schools for Thursday and Friday though!
