I’ve had this idea for awhile and I had to purge some of it from my head before it exploded. I only have so much room in there, you know. Y’all know how much I adore vampires, right?!
We all huddled together, naked and hungry, trapped within the confines of a guarded cabin. Skin and bone to skin and bone.
During the day, we busied ourselves by finding shadows to hide in to avoid the direct sunlight as it streamed in through the filthy windows. The dirt did nothing to dull the effect that the bright rays of light had on our withering bodies. Sun is sun and we burn from it.
With evening came some bit relief. Another day of deadly sunlight gone and the sweet familiar sanctuary of night embraced us and comforted us as best it could. It was usually dusk when the guards threw bags of putrid blood, tainted by sickness and suffering, into our cabin. We were so hungry that none of us cared that our rations were cold and aged, we drank ravenously anyways, making sure there was enough for everyone. The few drops we each received barely took the edge off our hunger but it was enough to strengthen our resolve and determination to stay alive.
There were some nights we would feel strong enough and we’d feast on each other, mixing our blood, becoming one. It was on those nights we’d talk, laugh and dance. Some would even find the strength to make love, even in the despicable conditions we were in, vampiric nature would take over.
I don’t know how long we’ve been trapped here in what was once a summer camp, now repurposed as a kind of vampire concentration camp. I do know that many of my kind were destroyed here. I’m sure there were other camps, all over the world, serving the same purpose. Vampire annihilation.
To understand what is happening, I need to start from the beginning.
By the turn of the century, my kind had made peace with humans. We lived amongst them, acclimating to the ways of humans. Finally fitting in after centuries of hiding and masquerading.
The order was precarious but seemed to grow a bit more secure as humans realized that vampires didn’t need them for food. Unless they were offering. And there were many humans that offered. Because, in exchange for the taste of fresh, warm blood, vampires gave the humans what they wanted. The true reason why so many humans offered themselves to us
I still laugh at that fact because, in some ways, humans became vampires whores. Or was it vice versa?
I am Nadia, royalty and leader of the vampire tribes of the Midwest. A full blooded vampire, I was envied and revered because pure bloods were rare amongst us. Only true vampires, ones born not made, could rise in ranks and rule. Only we could make pacts and treaties with the humans. It was our leaders that held conferences with the human world leaders to carve out the treaty which allowed us rights to walk amongst people that fear us. The Treaty of Civility.
The Treaty allowed vampires the same rights as the humans. We could finally bring our successful business into light benefiting both vampires and humans. Vampires were allowed into the human world with guarded yet open human arms.
During this time, we all thrived. Business flourished. Vampire knowledge from centuries of experience was listened to and applied to daily life. Vampires are known to be highly educated. Education is something our kind takes very seriously and strict rules are adhered to in that regard. Our young, and yes, many of us have children, are schooled much in the same way as humans. But failure is not an option and all our children go on to the universities. Many Ivy Leagues had been unknowingly hosting vampire students. For decades we hid our identities but with the treaty, our children didn’t have to conceal themselves.
In 2009, 9 years after the Treaty of Civility had been signed and put into place, things began to change. Rumors of an impending global economic and societal meltdown were beginning to circulate, first as whispers then louder. Fiercer.
The world needed a scapegoat. The worlds leaders turned on the vampires, werewolves and faeries, who had all benefited from the Treaty of Civility. Fingers pointing, blaming my kind for the downturn of the economy. Mass chaos ensued. Renegades on crusades, we were being slaughtered in the streets and in our homes.
The talisman that many of us wore which allowed us to live in the sunlight were ripped from our chests and many of us disintegrated on the spot while crowds gathered, cheering on the death and destruction. It had become a violent time.
A year after the slaughters began, they stopped. An organization to the killing was being made, mapped out by the world leaders. Rumors came that death camps were being set up and deportation would begin within the year. This was happening worldwide, there was nowhere to hide. So we faced it head on. We once again started becoming the predators we were born to be.
January 1st, 2010, the camps were beginning to be filled. Any non-human that was found was shipped to the closest holding center and then deported to a camp where they would rot and eventually die. Many of us weren’t caught, we went underground, under cover. There is a whole network of sewer systems and forgotten subway tunnels across the globe that became our home. Our training grounds. Vampire, werewolf and faerie, we become one with one common goal, survival.
Armies were formed. Numbers as large as any human army. But we were harder to kill once we were armed and ready.
I was caught, my pride too big to allow me to go into hiding again. I was put into a special camp. A camp that became home to the most powerful vampires, werewolves and faeries caught.
There were once many of us. There aren’t many of us left.
A war that was started by humans was now two sided.
May the best species win.
