Once upon a time, a very upset sixth grade girl kicked a window in a living room. It shattered from her anger, chards of glass falling into the frame and on the floor, narrowly missing her legs.
By mistake.
“But I didn’t mean to!”
No consequences were enforced.
The window was boarded until the parents could afford to replace it.
Once upon a time, a very hyperactive boy decided it would be a wonderful idea to jump up on and dance upon a VERY antique, VERY expensive wooden Chinese scroll table. The beautiful scroll leg splintered and broke.
By mistake.
“But I didn’t mean to!”
No consequences were enforced.
The broken table sits in the garage where it will probably turn back into a tree.
Once upon a time, a few months ago, another young man decided to take the Playstation 3 into his room where it was used to play video games, instead of being used as a Blu-Ray player. When it was reattached to its regularly scheduled television, the Blu-Ray player function was not working.
By mistake. He didn’t mean to.
The game console sits in the kids room where it’s used for, well…games.
But now I’m being pestered and asked about what are the consequences that are going to be enforced.
Well, after much thought and consideration. And in conjunction with the precedence set from two kids that caused greater and far more expensive damage.
I’ll tell you what am I going to do about it?
Yeah…
Nothing.
What’s fair is fair.
After all, he didn’t mean to.
Girl, I cannot even imagine the chaos of living in a large blended family. I have a hard time fairly disciplining my own children. And I’ve only got two of them!
I will say, though, that ALL children involved in those “accidents” would have to pay. Either out of their ass or out of their savings!
I for one believe there shouldn’t be any discussion of “morals” or “fairness” when it comes to crime and punishment. You do things that hurt or damage something or someone, and you pay the consequences.

As I tell Baby Girl, sorry doesn’t fix it. Of course I understand that philosophy doesn’t work everyone.
