Sometimes I feel like I have to become a sell-out on my blog. Sometimes, yet oh so very rarely, I get pitches for various items that, as you know, the PR company wants bloggers to promote…for a little item and without any money involved.
I don’t generally do it.
It’s insulting because my words are worth way more than a $9.99 iPod cover.
Although, I have been known to review a toy or two ;).
It’s been ages really, where, aside for some sponsored posts that I received big bucks for, I’ve reviewed an actual product for products sake.
I don’t know what came over me, the other day.
*hangs head in shame*
I got this very nice pitch from the PR company that handles Blue Bunny ice cream. And they were offering me all these mouth watering flavors of ice cream and ice cream sandwiches plus all the paper goods needed to host a party.
MY MOUTH. WATERED. Literally.
I drooled all over the keyboard.
And before I knew it, I agreed.
I’m going to have a party with lots of ice cream. I’m thinking it’s going to be during Chanukka and I’ll have some friends over with their kids, do a grab bag gift exchange and eat ice cream. LOTS of it. In exchange for a few tweets with a sponsored hashtag. No biggie.
Then…
I got this email from another PR company. Offering me silly Hello Kitty things.
Except…
One was a Hello Kitty blue tooth that I couldn’t help but think how my daughter would love it.
And I accepted.
Because, really? What a great Chanukka gift in exchange for a little review post, right?
But why do I feel like such a traitor to my beloved blog?
For yummy (hopefully) ice cream and a blue tooth set for my daughter.
UGH.
Am I selling out or am I simply expanding my blogging horizons?
I vote for expanding your blogging horizons… because I probably would have agreed to both.
It’s your blog. I don’t think it devalues your worth if you agree to cut two companies a deal. If it’s a product you like or want to try and are willing to make an unpaid exception for them… go for it… without guilt.

As long as you issue the standard disclaimer, nothing wrong with a product review. I confess; the product reviews I’ve done for MomCentral have been fun and are saving me bucks on holiday shopping. I do my best to make the review posts personal; it’s better for my blog and I think it adds to the review.
In short, no, you’re not selling out. And for ice cream? Yum!!

You are doing a review for products that you will use and probably like. I don’t see that as a sell out. It would only be a sell out if you tell us they are great products when they really suck.

If someone offered me ice cream and hello kitty stuff I would roll over happily. So don’t feel bad.

I wouldn’t call it selling out. I think a lot of bloggers participate in product reviews. Actually, I’m going to start doing it next year on my blog. Keep up the good work.

Even if it’s a sell out who really cares? It’s your blog, and you can do whatever you want it. Have fun with it, do reviews on things you like, and forget about what others think. heck, make us all envious of you

You pick and choose your reviews, so you’re discriminating – whatever makes you happy – it’s your space, and you do with it what you want. -why not? Don’t beat yourself up over it. I mean it IS Hello Kitty and Ice Cream, come ON! 😉

It’s your blog, Melissa.
Moreso…. after visiting the Blue Bunny headquarters I only buy their Ice Cream. I’ve never blogged about it. But I guess I should. Not only do we love – we appreciate good family owned businesses.

Sounds like those PR people drive a hard bargain. Free ice cream? Hello Kitty blue tooth? Nothing wrong with that! As long as you aren’t trying to peddle hemorrhoid creams, I’ll continue to read away.
