Thank you for taking a stand! Damn the brand!

I enjoy reading you for you thoughts and content, not that you fit into a certain brand or genre (IMHO anyways).

As a starting blogger, it is nice to see someone more concerned about being authentic. Thank you.

I've done seminars on branding and think it's important at times.. the ISSUE is that people get way too serious about it.. friend told me to "stop being the party chick who can't get a date" or something like that.. dude, that's not my brand.. that's who I AM.. which IS my brand. Middle aged chick who kicks ass, takes names and still can't get a date.. dammit. Maybe I SHOULD work on a new brand.. LMAO

Personal branding in the personal blogging sphere seems unnecessary to me. I can understand how it applies to companies and entrepreneurs who are trying to establish a Web presence, but it really shouldn't be attached to everyday folks who want to foster an online community. When I think of personal branding, I think of any one of the Disney kids who are scrubbed, polished, styled and trained to become commodities. Deep underneath the contrived veneer is a real kid dying a little each day. Our blogs are the same way. My favorite ones (yours included) are those that help me feel I'm not alone with my feelings and experiences. I don't care about your damned Dyson and what it did to your rug.

I read this yesterday while on the road (good thing I wasn't driving) and my opinion is that they "brand" themselves because they don't understand that just being yourself is the ticket. Look at you....no branding no nada. Just Melissa writing a kick ass blog. The whole branding thing makes me think of these bloggers who are the "reality TV" types, they offer no real value but do offer a sort of train wreck value that we cannot look away from. I think if they focused more on being themselves and not what they think they are suppose to be or making themselves out to be something they are not (can't decide on their identity online) they wouldn't be throwing around the whole "brand" comment.

I think the words "personal branding" get thrown around a lot and honestly I can't even hear it anymore, just like "mommy blogger", "search engine optimization", "social media guru". They all started sounding fake and patronizing a long time ago and I'm just sick of them.
I don't want to diss those who are making a business out of their blog, but I think to do that you have to have something valuable, a talent. Doing reviews isn't a talent. Neither is gossiping. Neither is doing a vlog talking about your day. But you know what, as long as we are ourselves and we are honest with our readers, it doesn't even matter that much.

Girl, I'm right there with you. I just read those folks I enjoy, and write for those folks I, uh, enjoy. I've recently dropped a few blogs from my list because they are so commercial. While I do enjoy reading funny stuff about a person's life, I hate reading about how WONDERFUL they are.

I recently accused of acting naive because I didn't know anything about blogging stats. I honestly did not know it was possible and had no clue (still don't) how to capture them. When I said that I only blogged to save money on therapy and to entertain my FB friends, I was laughed at! "Sure," they said.

WHAT-EVA! Sorry for the ramble. As always, I love your blog. Please don't laugh at me when I say, "What the hell are you talking about??? Branding?? You are speaking Greek to me."

When you are a writer your name is your personal brand but the concept of branding is weird to me and kind of stupid. Can't I just be self-employed and not be Lauren blah blah blah, LLC? Or whatever. It's stupid. You're a rock star.

(stands up clapping) Amen! I agree 100%! I blog because it is an outlet for... everything that goes on in my daily life, and my friends like to read about the crazy stuff that happens to me on a daily basis. I don't want to be a "brand". I just want to be me.

Two things...

First: It's just plain awesome that Stacy wrote what she did. It reminded me that blogs are supposed to be interactive, and we should be supporting and commenting on those we find meaningful or funny or a good read.

Second: She's right. I really enjoy reading your posts. I never thought much about why, but now I know.

Coffee. Soon.
