Because My Son Looks After My Heart

My son was so mad at me yesterday. I don’t remember why. Probably because he had to go to school or he didn’t like something I said.

I told him to get over it. Because I’m empathetic like that.

He scowled at me, crossed his arms over his chest and yelled “Fine then. I’m running away from home. Forever. And you’ll never, ever see me again!” And he stomped his foot for good measure.

I looked at him and tried really hard not to laugh. I said simply, “If you left Mommy. If you ran away. I would die.”

He uncrossed his arms and looked at me seriously, “Why would you die?” he asked.

“Because,” I explained, very seriously “If you left me. You’d take my heart with you. And I can’t live without my heart.”

He stood there looking at me, contemplating and assessing the situation at hand.

He responded, “Well Mommy. Then I’d better not run away for too long because I don’t want you to die.” and he smiled.

We hugged. He tossed his head, shifting the hair from his eye and looked directly into my eyes and said “I love you Mommy. So, will you buy me a toy instead?”

I’m thinking I may pack his bags for him.

  1. AWWWWW that. is. priceless.

My mom used to say: “Okay, let’s go pack our bags, I’ve got to go with you because I couldn’t live without you”

  3. I adore this answer – I have not heard those horrible words out of any of my kids mouths yet – but if I do – do you mind if I swipe yours?

What a sweet heart! Who has who wrapped around a little finger?

I don’t remember my kids ever threatening to run away, I did, but can’t think of them doing that.

  9. It’s amazing how words of true sentiment can calm the angriest of kids. I’m sure I’ll be saying roughly the same thing to my son some day soon.

    Great answer!

I think a temporary rash would have been better then death. That way he could have left a little and then come back. LOL!

LOL! A truly hilarious take on how things happen in real life. That’s so sweet – I think my son probably would have ran away just to spite me. :-)
