My 5 year old son who was snuggling on the couch next to me, holding the remote control and flipping through the television channels with one hand and the other hand in his pants, in typical XY fashion,
OUT OF NOWHERE and quite nonchalantly asked me…
“Mommy, do dogs lay eggs?”
Looked at me from underneath his bangs that are in desperate need of a trim. Smirked. And, resumed fondling himself and flipping through the channels.
Seems I have some explaining to do. Right after I finish my coffee.
My boys got upset when we had to take the cat to get fixed. “Don’t let them give her that shot so she can’t have babies,” they cried. Of course, when they’re little, they think they popped out of the bellybutton. They get more embarrassed than me when we bump the discussion up to reality–of course, we take our time about it!
hehe ‘do dogs lay eggs?’ the talk is always FUN. i started the talk w my girls at age 8 (since puberty can start early for girls) and at least once a yr since. i also discuss any concerns they happen to bring up w the open-door policy i started bk when my 22 yr old was a kid. isn’t it amazing how boys & girls think though? :0)
I tried talking to my sons at what I thought was an appropriate age to have ‘The Talk’. Apparently I should have had it some time before they started kindergarten – because they KNEW – and were perfectly willing to share what they knew with ME. And I wasn’t ready.
Hey dude- LOL on the fondling WHILE asking about eggs! teehee! I just wrote a post last week about my son asking how girls pee if they don’t have a wienis (his merge of the words ;wiener’ and ‘penis’) and I’m all like ummmmmmmmmmm. Ask Dad this stuff! lol
And hey on the MD Mombloggers thing we just sort of got together as like a ‘we all blog in a vacuum so let’s get together with other moms who do the same thing’ but i have to credit Lara of chickennuggestsofwisdom.blogspot for doing the hard work- I just got Dunkin Donuts to throw in free yummies for the swag bags, which rocked. I definitely encourage like little local ‘Mini-Bloghers’ cause Girls Nite Out is tons of fun!!
xoxo
That story is hilarious. It will be interesting to see how he reacts once you explain the process thoroughly.
Sounds like Iceel had the opposite experience: those kids had the talk with her.
That’s like my 5yr old daughter who somehow knew that the baby is pushed from the belly. I know she knew a baby is in the belly, but wasn’t prepared for her question…
“Mommy, when you push to get the baby out where does it come out from? Your mouth?”
Me: “Um no.”
Her: “ohhh your nose?”
Me: “E, I am Not having this conversation right now. Maybe when you are a bit older.”
She knows the difference between boys and girls and I certainly don’t need her investigating further at this time. She’s only 5! Maybe I will buy her a breastfeeding babydoll. Lmao.
(Please excuse any errors…typed on my Blackberry).
Yes. Dogs lay eggs. But not on this planet. That is what happens on planet Xenunu. Here on earth we don’t have egg laying dogs. Just egg laying chickens. The chickens on Xenunu don’t lay eggs though, they kind of spit them out of their mouths after they eat.
(Don’t you wish I was your mother?)
