I was on Twitter tonight. Chatting up a storm with Melisa with one S. We were having fun talking about @duranduran. Which got me reminiscing. By myself. So I had to share it with…you. My beloved bloggy friends.
The 1980’s. Come with me. Let’s reminisce together…
My favorite radio station, back in the early, early 80’s…102.7. They played all the New Music bands. The 2nd British invasion. They had a copy of Planet Earth. By a band whose name I couldn’t always remember.
It was, if I remember correctly…a bootleg ALBUM. Yes people…vinyl.
Anyway…
Planet Earth. It was awesome. I was hooked.
But then…
The band that sang Planet Earth…went mainstream.
Hungry Like The Wolf was released. Top 40 radio stations were doing an outstanding job overplaying it. So I could hear it…constantly.
And I…was in love. Sight unseen.
I didn’t want to know what they looked like because, well, it seemed that all bands were FUGLY.
I was so worried about being disappointed.
But…
Curiosity got the best of me. 7th grade. Biology. Ms. McSomethingorother.
A friend had Tiger Beat…or Teen Beat.
And there…in blazing color…
was Duran Duran.
Simon. John. Nick. Roger. And Andy.
And hooked…was an understatement.
The instant I knew how gorgeous they were…
I was hitting the magazine stands. And record stores for the posters. Oh, and imported magazines.
When I tell you that there was not one single space on my walls…and ceiling…left uncovered…
I am NOT exaggerating.
Wall to wall of New Romantic hotness. (Maybe some John Stamos from his GH Blacky days, too)
Full sized posters. Pull outs from the teen mags. Little tiny black and white cut outs. It did NOT matter. As long as one…or all…of MY band, Duran Duran…was on it.
I begged my parents for cable. I NEEDED to have Mtv. So I could catch a glimpse of their latest video. They refused. As a matter of fact, they didn’t get any type of cable until I moved out of the house…which I’m still pissed about…MOM.
I begged to go to my Grandparents house…because they had cable. They were waaaaay cooler than my parents. But there…I could sit. All day. Glued to Mtv. Because I WANT my MTV! Remember Billy Idol, sneering as he said that?
I made sure to have EVERY SINGLE cassette that came out. Sometimes, I could only find the album (there is that vinyl reference again).
But I would blast their music from my boom box OR my old, blue and white record player…
Either way, my parents would yell at me to turn down the shit that I was listening to!
But…
It was…a sickness.
I loved them. Duran Duran.
I figured that I would marry one of them. Really…I didn’t care if it was Simon or John…it didn’t matter(I’d probably dump the hubby for them…still ;)). I loved both of them.
I even ran out and bought a black hat that matched JT’s.
And the concerts…
OH…the concerts…
The thought of ever missing one…
Well…it wasn’t an option. I’d rather die than miss a Duran Duran concert.
So…up until recently, I saw almost EVERY SINGLE concert. I missed one due to being extremely pregnant and no one wanted to go with me…
Hell…I still have my concert t-shirt from 1983. A gray Seven and the Ragged Tiger shirt. With the neck band cut off (by me) because the Flashdance look was in around the same time…
And I sleep in it…still. Yeah, I’m sexy like that. What? I look cute. Sometimes, if I’m really wanting to get hubby in the mood…I put a banana clip in. Now THAT is what sexy is all about.
Also…
I had this big, fat black cat…
who I named Simon because…I touched Simon Le Bons shoulder when he rushed the audience at Pine Knob Music Theater right before I got my little pussy cat.
But this Duran Duran…obsession. Now that I’m allegedly, an adult…
I guess it isn’t an obsession anymore. It’s a strong affection.
But, when I tell people I’m stuck in the 80’s. I’m really…still stuck in the 80’s. Because I would much rather listen to an old cassette of Duran Duran. Then listen to most of the newer artists. OK, fine…I don’t listen to cassettes. I DOWNLOAD onto my iPod. But WHATEVER. Like, I’m so sure. Like, gag me with a spoon.
Because, quite frankly…
With music like I grew up with. Bands like U2. The Cure. Duran Duran…swoon. And the other awesome bands from that era…
I don’t know how kids these days can listen to this crap. I can’t BELIEVE that they call the shit the listen to and shatter their eardrums with. Music these days.
Now, Duran Duran. THAT is music.
OMG…
I’ve turned into my parents except…
Now I have cable!
LMAO… i too hate it when I realize I am becoming much like my parents. 🙂 Thanks for the flashback my friend.
Oh, those were the days! BTW, you failed to mention your life size Shaun Cassidy poster that you used to smooch on. 🙂 D2 were MUCH better looking and can still sing better than ole Shaun ever did! Unlike you, I do enjoy some current music, but nothing beats the 80s!! Aaahh…the joys of cruising around with windows down blasting the Pretty in Pink soundtrack and feeling the angst. Ridiculously huge hair, blue eyeliner and bubblegum pink lips…now that was a look! LB, care to weigh in on that?! ;). What fun we had, my friend, what fun we had!!
I have to say if we base it on concert attendance, you win. But I think we shouldn’t base it on concert attendance. That way at least I have a chance.
Hilarious that Simon would have been my other choice too!
AND OMG, the photo up there? That’s the poster that hung on my bedroom wall. The one I used to sit and stare at, and swoooooooon……
Expect a post of my own later next week, Missy! Game on! 🙂
xoxo
P.S. JT is MINE, ALL MINE!!! Bwahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
By the 80s I was in college, but DD was still pretty hot. I’m with you on the ‘music’ today. Who will our kids think back on when they’re our age and be really able to say ‘that was good music.’
oh, ladies. give me the beatles any day (paul! oh paul! what has happened to you since your halcyon days!)
I knew there was another reason I loved you…I was finishing up high school when DD were huge, but I’ve ALWAYS been a fan. JT was my fave too :). I can still listen to New Moon on Monday 25 times straight.
In fact, we went to their reunion concert when the girlie was 4 months old (OMG, that’s 4 years ago now) and I can’t remember having that much fun in ages… nor since. They were amazing! It helps that the hubby is also a big fan of Duran Duran. He bought the tickets when I was pregnant, knowing that it would an awesome thing to do as a “first night away from baby” date.
And I agree, the Cure, U2 when they were beyond good … the Smiths, New Order … the kids these days do NOT know good music.
i miss the 80’s. we should all go back.
I saved my mom a lot of money for wallpaper. D2 was all over my wall and there is nothing that I didn’t know about those hotties!!!
