We used to have days, when I was little, that were subzero temps. We did! I remember them.
And I ALSO remember…
They did NOT cancel school.
We had to stand at the busstop. Bundled up in our snowsuits, boots, mittens, scarves wrapped a kagillion times around our heads, allowing only our eyes to show…condensation from our breath making our scarves wet…and hard because they would freeze.
It was that cold…but…
We did.
We stood there. Freezing.
And…
We had to play outside during recess.
Even in freezing cold temperatures.
I remember!!
I remember my nose running and the snot freezing to my face. And trying to wipe it off with a glove that was wet from playing in the snow.
And…
We used to play outside in this kind of weather, when we got home from school.
We would hurry to finish our homework.
We would pile on our copious amounts of winter gear.
And hit the hill in our backyard.
My favorite sled was the saucer. It would spin in circles down our hill and I would hit the trees that lined the yard. It was AWESOME.
And we’d come in and have hot chocolate or soup.
The good old days.
So why…
I ask you…
Was school canceled today?
Ridiculous.
Pathetic.
A sad commentary on how our society has become…that GOD FORBID…our kids either have to get super bundled up and run to the bus stop at the last minute…or
a parent…gasp…might have to get their butts into the car and drive their kids to school.
I understand school districts that don’t have buses.
I understand having to shut down because 90% of the kids have to walk to school.
But…
in my district. And the surrounding districts…
where we have buses.
And we have subdivisions where parents can call a neighbor…
These kids should be in school.
Just my opinion.
Take it with a grain of salt…
but…
YOU KNOW I’M RIGHT!! 🙂

You are right… I remember those days too…(before I moved to Texas) we lived in the mid-west & it was COLD..
Here in Norway, the kids are out in all sorts of weather.. they even go out & play in the rain… at first I was a little shocked, now I love it…
Some parts of Norway get very cold… & lots of snow.. we however, are right on the coast.. I think we may have had maybe an inch of snow the entire winter…. Today it was just above freezing… I think it is way colder in the US this year..
I have varying thoughts, but if I have to go to work and park forever away and walk your young little butt can walk to the bus stop. You get on a warm bus in the morning and you get on a warm bus at night. I have to sit in my cold car after work until it warms up enought to drive the .7 miles home…
I totally see where you’re coming from – as a mother I totally agree: suck it up! walk it off! Freezing temperatures are definitely not a reason to close a school. But then, the risk services side of me takes over – what if a kid got frostbitten and the parents sued? Because sadly, that’s the kind of world we live in now.
I live in VA (since ’03), and during that time, we have 3 times had school canceled on account of rain. Yes, rain.
I grew up in MI, so I spent those days enjoying the insanity that is the excuse for a local school board and using it as an excuse to play 10 hours of video games.
I’m not too picky.
I remember playing out in the snow, making snow men, forts and having snow ball fights. We would get out first thing in the morning and not come home until night. Ah, the good old days.
I wholeheartedly agree with you, but I really have no right to an opinion, here in Phoenix. I wish they’d cancel school due to the 125-degree heat. but that’s just me. Love your blog!
Couldn’t agree with you more.
I grew up in Miami, where um there is no snow, but I now live in northern Virgina, and it seems if we have a bit of ice on the ground schools are canceled or open late. I was just wondering yesterday when we had 8 degree weather how these children were ever going to learn anything.
We’ve never actually canceled because of cold but we have had a few delays because of it. Although, I woke up on Friday and it was 2 degrees out and we didn’t have one….I thought that was weird!
Canceling is a bit much…
Wow, I think I should be glad that I am no in the sub zero weather… Your blog is so great!!
Thank you so much for supporting my big day past Wednesday – your comment meant a lot to me. Also, thank you so much for the link to this blog:)
Hope you’re having a good weekend and please stay warm and in touch!!!
You are right! And why can’t they have recess when it’s cold?
We had one of those saucer things too. And yes, we walked to school in below freezing temperatures. wimps.
