I was so lucky. Tonight. And I’m talking an innocent type of luck.
I got to go to dinner with my oldest son. Just him and I.
It was wonderful.
As we were driving home we were discussing religious school.
He hates it. So did I. But I had to go all the way through my senior year in high school. And so will he.
He asked me, though, such an amazingly deep question. Regarding religion. And…I had NO CLUE how to answer him.
Maybe one of you…my way smarter than me…friends.
He wanted to know why. Back in the biblical days. There were so many prophets who had a direct line to God. They were all in constant communication.
So why is it that there really are no more prophets. Does God not find anyone worthy anymore?
Yeah…he asked me all that. I just looked at him. I might have made a bawking sound…like air was escaping my mouth but no words were flowing.
I told him we should call my Dad.
We did.
He didn’t really know.
So…I sent a message through facebook to one of the Rabbis at my temple. But…I’m curious what my little friends out there have to say…
My son is waiting. He’s really curious. And he’s looking forward to your answers!!
In my religion we believe that there are modern day prophets. Many of them. But they aren’t talked about they way there were “in the old days” because it just isn’t “cool” anymore in our culture. People are much more into celebrities than religion these days.
Anyone can be a prophet. God speaks to all of us. We just have to listen. It may not be in a loud voice but in a clear decision in our heart.
🙂
Sorry, I meant:
they aren’t talked about the way they were in the old days.
My fingers weren’t working fast enough. 😉
I believe personal revelation continues today. “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him” (James 1:5).
“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, [and] temperance” (Galatians 5:22–23). These feelings are personal revelation to you when you are doing things which are condusive to the spirit.
As the Savior himself taught in the Bible, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you” (Matthew 7:7).
That is really an awesome question… one that transcends so many religions.
If there are true prophets today, and I not saying there aren’t, I think we have become so cynical, so jaded, that accepting them as authentic messengers of God is nearly impossible.
WOW!!I think it is awesome that he is even thinking deep enough to ask that question. While I am Catholic (mostly), I believe that things aren’t looked at as they were in the old days, I believe in the good around us, and there is plenty, are examples of modern day prophets. That doesn’t really help. Let us know what you find out.

I also believe there are present-day prophets. The difficulty comes in knowing which ones are real, but Scripture does say the proof is in the pudding, so to speak: They are never wrong in their predictions.
It’s lovely that your son is thinking of these things, and even more lovely that you were so open to the question, and ready to discuss it!
Do keep us updated on your inquiries.
Interesting you bring this up! This is the exact topic we are covering in my high school religion class that I teach! And a few of my students have asked this question.
I believe there are modern day prophets. I think we’re maybe not hearing them or recognizing them. I think we’re overlooking them. It’s like miracles. My students want MAJOR miracles to help them believe. They don’t see the little everyday miracles that happen all the time. The prophets are there but we’re not seeing them or maybe we’re not ready to hear them and what they have to say.
I really do think they are there.
PS- I think it’s great you guys got to spend that time together!!
not only do i not know the answer…i dont even understand the question! (maybe cuz i didnt go to religious school???)
I’m very religious, as you know, and I believe revelation certainly continues. I do not think people want to hear the words the modern prophets preach, and if you look at most of the ones considered authentic in the bible, they didn’t WANT to be prophets due to the problems it caused them. They had HARD lives & several died for what they spoke. We will continue to ignore the word -which will keep bringing more harsh punishments upon us. For some reason, people want a God who only loves but does not pass judgement – but if you are reading the torah, you know He’s not always happy with us, and I know that makes him quite sad – because he only gave us 10 rules to follow.
Wow, pandora’s box asking me a question like this… I am with Kat. God wouldn’t leave us alone, he loves us as much as he loved biblical people. We have prophets on the earth today. We have scriptures that are still undiscovered. You have a deep boy there!
I think I’m going to plead the fifth. 12 years in a fundmentalist religious (I refuse to call it Christian, but it was protestant, not Catholic) environment has made me cynical. I consider myself a religious school survivor. I need several separate blogs to unpack all my baggage.
