I was sitting on the toilet, leafing through a short story and poetry book of my husbands while a waited for another blockage to unblock…and came across a poem. I kept reading it and re-reading it…I had some time to kill. I had never heard of it before but was quite taken by the simplicity of it and the message behind it.
When I was finished hanging out in the bathroom for some privacy, I took the book over to my husband. I read him the poem and told him how much I loved it and how amazed I was that I had never heard of it.
He sort of snorted and said that EVERYONE has heard of it because it was a famous poem by a famous writer.
OK…well, color me stupid because this was the first I”ve heard of it. But…I’m going to share it with all of you so that you can tell me how ignorant I am for not hearing of Gwendolyn Brooks or her poem called “We Real Cool” before…so here it is for you…
We Real Cool by Gwendolyn Brooks
We real cool. We
Left school. We
Lurk late. We
Strike straight. We
Sing sin. We
Thin gin. We
Jazz June. We
Die soon.
I LOVE that poem! Love it. I love how it’s written. I love how it’s worded. I love what it says. It’s brilliant. But then again…
EVERYONE already knew that…except poor little me!!
Have an AWESOME weekend, OK!
XOXO

thanks for the adorable note tonight.
you rock sweetie.
kathleenybeany 🙂 xoxo xoxo
No, no! You’re not the only one who’s never heard of it. I haven’t either. Although, I do like it too!
I haven’t heard of it either…I did like it though!!
Yea, you can color me stupid too, I haven’t read it either. But it is very cool, thanks for sharing!
Apparently I join the stupid team then. Never heard of it til tonight. lol
Count me in too – I have never heard it either, but I really like it. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing–I think I’ma gonna transcribe this and post it in my classroom! BTW, it’s that time of week again–please drop on in for a little Silly Summer Sunday Sweepstakes. You have 2 chances to play!
Love that poem! I’m certainly not going to call you an idiot for not knowing it, though! I was an English major for a while… Before I became an art major, then biology major, then environmental science major, then back to art major… But, after I was an art major the first time… Anyway, I wouldn’t think EVERYONE knew it… 🙂
Nope… haven’t heard it before either. But you’re right… it is a cool poem.
I like it too, especially the structure. Hope the unblockage was swift and full. 🙂
never heard it.
i dont get it.
Yeah, never heard of it, so I guess I’m stupid and in the dark too!
ok, first, thank you for the opening visual of you on the toilet. I am so glad we’re tight like that where I can join you on the toilet for a good read 🙂 Second…. I am the other only illiterate in the world since I have NEVER heard this.
It sure was fun coming to check up, now back to the trenches. I can’t wait for the depressing winter to come back so that I can do important stuff like whinging on blogs. Huggs from England, M!
No, everyone has not heard of it (but I like it too!). And I was an English major. With a Master’s Degree. We read a LOT of poetry. Just not that one.
